Flu Season Hack: Make Your Own Instant Pot Immunity Shots

In this week’s news: “This flu season could be one of the worst in years.” I already battled a cold within the first week of 2020 – so I decided to whip up a fresh batch of homemade immunity shots.

Wellness drinks are a health trend every juice bar swears on and charge up to $10 for these tiny health elixirs. I’m all for supporting a small business, but this does not fit into my daily budget, so I decided to make my own.

These vitamin-packed concoctions give you a boost of immunity powerhouse boosters and natural anti-inflammatories. If you feel a cold coming on, I can’t for sure say they are your cure, but they will give you the dietary boost to help fight it.

I don’t own a juicer, so I decided to get creative with my Instant Pot.

Using an Instant Pot is basically a pasteurization method, which means your juice elixirs will not expire as quickly as cold-pressed juice would and are safe from any harmful pathogens such as e.coli.

On the downside, cold-pressed is said to have even more nutrients; however, cold-pressed juicing requires more ingredients and is more expensive.

Here are the ingredients I chose to use:

  • 1 Ginger Root
  • 1 Turmeric Root or 1 TBSP Tumeric Powder
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 2 Oranges
  • 2 Lemons
  • 1 TSP Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 TSP Black Pepper
  • 6 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 4 Cups Water

Ginger Root

Ginger helps to halt the growth of bacteria like e.coli and even some viruses. If your stomach is upset, ginger aids cramping pains and calms nausea. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory and has even been proven to have benefits for cancers, menstrual pains, diabetes and more.

Tumeric

Turmeric is another root that is a natural anti-inflammatory similar to ginger. It can help health problems caused by inflammation from Irritable Bowel Syndrome to arthritis. It has been said Turmeric absorption is increased with the presence of black pepper.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is said to help balance your pH, decreasing your body’s acidity. Research says a more acidic body is more prone to illness and developing cancer. The goal is to strive for a more alkaline diet and Apple Cider Vinegar is on top of that list for aiding gut bacteria and blood glucose.

Grapefruit

This tart fruit is loaded with vitamins A and C as well as other nutrients. It has been said to help with skin and even weight loss, and in our case makes the flavors of the tangy spices more tolerable.

Oranges

The American Heart Association says citrus fruits are good for your heart. Oranges also provide fiber, potassium, vitamin C and choline, all proven to support overall health.

Lemons

This sour fruit helps with digestion, anemia and flushes your system preventing kidney stones. It has also been proven to aid weight loss.

Cayenne Pepper

This flavorful pepper is commonly used to spice up southwestern cuisines but also has a list of antioxidant powers that can help fight illness. It is high in vitamin C & E and has even been studied for helping fight the bacteria that causes strep throat. The taste may overwhelm you, but it will help clear a stuffy nose.

Garlic

History shows garlic has been used for medicinal purposes since 460 BC originally published in The Journal Of Nutrition. It has proven benefits for heart health, cancer prevention, fighting bacteria, and controlling high cholesterol.

Directions:

  1. Cut all your root ingredients (ginger, turmeric, garlic) appropriately and place them into the Instant Pot.
  2. Cut the fruits & squeeze out the juice, but also throw in the whole piece – peel and all.
  3. Place all measured amounts of pepper, turmeric powder, and cayenne pepper into the pot.
  4. Add your desired water amount and apple cider vinegar measurement.
  5. Add anything extra to help you tolerate the taste such as more fruits or even honey.
  6. Turn Instant Pot on and secure lid.
  7. Set to SEALING and then MANUAL on HIGH for 5 minutes. ‘
  8. All to NATURAL RELEASE.
  9. Strain your tonic into mason jars or whatever storage you prefer.
  10. Let cool and enjoy!

And when I say enjoy, I mean remind yourself this is for your health and that if you can down a shot of tequila, you can down this shot too. My boyfriend has had the pleasure of trying all the versions of this recipe I have played around with and he would tell you they are far from a treat.

Drink it fast and thank yourself later as you naturally balance your body’s pH and defend yourself against bad bacteria and viruses.
